In my experience the Toyota Prius is a solid car. My aunt own a Prius and she really enjoys driving it. She has to get gas around once every month or so. I myself drive a very fuel inefficient 1997 Ford Explorer. I have to get gas every week. However there have been stories in the news latley of problems with the Prius. There was a Prius that couldn't stop and ended up having to be forcefully stopped by a police car. This brings up the question, are fuel effecient cars less reliable than normal cars. I think I would take a risk on a fuel effecient car just because I would save so much money on gas.
